Finding Your Purpose in Your Early 20’s

So, you're on the cusp of your 20s, or maybe you're already here, feeling the pressure to have everything figured out before time slips away.

Ever find yourself pondering deep existential questions like, "What's my purpose? What am I even doing with my life?" Well, you've stumbled upon the right article.

In our society, we obsess over careers and work more than anything else. Isn't that the whole point of drowning in student debt after all—to land a lucrative job that’s somewhat fulfilling and hopefully does some good in the world? If that doesn’t pan out, we're all still expected to hustle just to keep our boats afloat in this ever-toughening world.

But here’s a twist: a new narrative is emerging. As more people shift towards holistic living, spirituality and natural remedies are becoming the new mainstream.  Psst..see “How Spirituality Saved My Life and Then Ruined It.” Yep, even finding your purpose can be a bit...depressing.

The quest for a grand life purpose—something monumental that defines your existence—can feel overwhelming. You might think it means becoming the next President, a celebrity, a tech mogul, or even the next Buddha. But let’s be real, that’s not the reality for most of us, and believing it is can put a ton of pressure on your shoulders. It took me YEARS to figure out my calling, searching for it in everything I did.

The whole “finding your purpose” spiel has been severely overcomplicated by spiritual gurus, self-proclaimed life coaches, and online influencers (no offense to them). If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably piled on an elephant-sized amount of pressure to discover this elusive purpose. And if you’re not living it yet, you might feel even more lost. It's easy for those ‘successful’ folks online to preach, “Look at me, I made my dreams come true and you can too”—right before they try to sell you their pricey program, which is probably just another pyramid scheme.

Honestly, everyone needs to chill the f out. I spent the better part of my late teens and twenties fretting over my 'destined' path, thinking I needed to have it all figured out fast. Because society says you build your career in your twenties, have life sorted by your thirties, and then just cruise to retirement, right? Here’s a truth bomb: YOU are your purpose. YOU get to decide. And heck, you might already be living your purpose without even realizing it. Maybe you have killer fashion sense that inspires others, or you're a math wizard who’s a top-notch engineer, or perhaps you brew the best latte in town, brightening people’s days one cup at a time. Maybe it’s not about your job at all. Perhaps you're an amazing parent, partner, friend, or just someone who spreads kindness daily.

While a few might be destined to be the next Beyonce, a U.S. President, or a spiritual guru, your purpose doesn’t have to be so grandiose. There’s no set timeline. Just focus on what’s right in front of you. Start small with something you enjoy, and let it grow. Your purpose is the journey, not the destination. Go with the flow of life. Everything you need will unfold in due time; you might just have to connect a few dots. So, take the pressure off. Newsflash: nobody has it all figured out, ever, no matter what age or stage they are in life.

Still wondering, "WTF is my purpose?" Take a deep dive into yourself. Meditate, journal, rediscover passions from your childhood, play, imagine, go outside, dance, enjoy music, pet some dogs. Find a guide for your journey of self-discovery—hey, maybe even shoot me a message. My goal is to help people just like you. I’ve been there.

Give yourself a pat on the back. Recognize how far you’ve come and all that’s still out there to discover. You’re doing better than you think, I promise.
