5 Ridiculously Easy Tips to Calm You TF Down
Nervous system working overtime? I got you.
Ah, living in alignment to our truest selves, our intuition, and living a fulfilling and peaceful life. Sounds pleasant, doesn’t it? We all see the “spiritual gurus” on social media who claim to be living this dream and that you can do it too, but they don’t really tell you how unless you buy their program which, even still, doesn’t give any specific details as to how you can achieve this peaceful state of mind and leave you feeling scammed. At least, that has been my experience.
Well today you’ve come to the right place at the right time. I am going to share with you 5 of the easiest tips you’ve ever heard of to give you instant peace, and it won’t cost you a thing besides a couple of minutes to read this, try it, share with a friend, or save for the next time you want to try this out.
One of the major keys to living an aligned, intuitive, and fulfilling life is…drumroll…being present. This is one of the simplest, yet somehow the most difficult things to achieve in our day and age considering the billions of distractions we experience every two seconds, largely due to the multitude of electronic devices we use constantly amongst dealing with the never-ending demands of life. I am not here to tell you the obvious of putting your phone down and stare off into space while you think about how to force yourself into getting present in the moment while you are actually fighting the urge to pick your phone back up again and get back to scrolling. It will be much easier than that. Once you get through these steps, it will be helpful to put the phone down for a minute though.
Step 1: Sight
What do you see right here, right now in this moment? Do you see your office space, with photos of your family or your coworker’s family, what color is the desk, what does your space really look like? Any windows? Maybe you’re at home on the couch- observe with your sight as many specific details as you can. What fabric is your couch? What colors are surrounding you? Take it all in.
Step 2: Touch
This one is fun. Get into the tiniest of details here. What things can you feel right now? Can you feel the socks on your feet, your clothes on your skin, are they warm, cold, restrictive, or loose? Can you feel your bottom sinking into the surface you’re sitting on? Maybe you can even feel the pokey gravel subtly poking through the bottom of your shoes as you walk outside. What temperatures and movements can you feel on your skin?
Step 3: Taste
Maybe less to take in here, but still just as important. What can you taste right now? Bad breath? Hunger? Mint from your toothpaste? Leftover chicken noodle soup? How much saliva is in your mouth?
Step 4: Smell
Yep, you guessed it. Now what do you smell? Again, get really detailed: can you smell the faint scent of laundry on your clothes mixed with a musty smell from your old house? Do you get a slight whiff of corn chips from your dog’s feet? Maybe you have an amazing candle going…describe the scent. Outside? Can you smell leaves, dirt, or wet pavement?
Step 5: Hear
Last but not least, what do you hear? Can you hear the background noise of your a/c unit, your refrigerator, or the rustling of someone else in the house? Maybe birds chirping, wind blowing through the trees, etc?
Bonus: 6th Sense: Intuition
If you are someone who is able to easily access their intuition, can you sense anything here? See any visions in your third eye or hear any messages coming through to you?
By now, you have figured out that the key to getting aligned and using presence to do so is through your senses. Regardless of if you have all 5, the ones we have are truly a gift, and they are here for your benefit. Without them, we would quite literally be in a world of hurt, unable to sense danger or appreciate beauty. Checking in with our senses is a fast, easy way to get grounded and pull yourself and your thoughts into this exact moment in time, not worrying about our cell phones or other obligations. Not only is this helpful for the reasons mentioned above but getting present and checking in helps regulate the nervous system and disrupts any anxiety causing patterns in our minds and brings us back into the body.
This exercise is most helpful when done multiple times during the day. The more frequently you practice the art of presence, the closer you become to aligned living and your intuition, and it will start to become a healthy habit.
